Does anyone else get frustrated at how little coverage women's sports get in the local press? Our local paper is covered in reports from football and rugby in the winter and cricket in the summer but netball seems to struggle to get a look in (occasionally a tournament may get a mention). How can we attract more press interest and get our fair share of coverage, anyone doing this better than us?
Not necessarily answering this point but have you read the news that Iranian Women's Football team banned by FIFA for wearing the Hijab - this is another blow for women's sport making it less accessible to all http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/Iranian-women-s-soccer-team-forfeits-2012-qualif?urn=oly-wp280
Yes I do get frustrated, we have tried talking to our local press to get more coverage but unfortunately it seems to fall on deaf ears, although we did get six lines once when we won a tournament! I think the issue is a lot bigger, with National press leading the way, we need to get the wider sports community involved and expect the national governing bodies to put more pressure on the national press to promote women's sports.
And as an aside the FIFA story just serves to prove that some governing bodies do not consider women's sports, the issues and pressures that are involved so we may not be able to rely on them to jump on the band wagon
I got very frustrated last night, missed the result of the England women's football match in the world cup, turned on Sky Sports news at 10pm only to have to wait over 10 minutes for something to appear on the screen (the updates that scroll along the bottom of the screen) it didn't appear to feature at all as a major sporting event. if only the powers that be watched a few matches they might see that women's football has progressed massively and is a really great spectator sport - oh yes and when they get tackled they don't roll around on the floor feigning injury for effect!
We've had the same problems trying to get coverage in our local paper. Basically unless we write it, and provide photos they're not interested, and even when we do write stuff, they edit it down to a summary. It's insulting to see how much coverage is given to men's sports.
